Preserving photographic and Fine Art prints

A photograph’s lifespan depends on the whole combination: paper, ink, mounting, light and storage conditions. A few simple precautions reduce risks without turning your home into a museum.

Choosing a location

Avoid direct sun and places subject to major changes in humidity or temperature. Do not place a fragile artwork directly above a heat source. A very humid room calls for particular consideration of support and mounting. Even glazing cannot eliminate every effect of light.

Handle with care

Hold prints by the edges with clean, dry hands, without touching the printed surface. Avoid rubbing, creasing and household cleaning products. To transport an artwork, use rigid protection suited to its size and an interleaving material that will not damage the surface.

Mounting matters

A high-quality paper can be compromised by unsuitable adhesive or board. Discuss materials in contact with the artwork and whether the mounting can be dismantled. “Acid-free” alone does not describe every preservation property of a material. For a valuable work or fragile original, explain your needs before production.

Glazing and reflections

Anti-reflective treatment improves viewing in some conditions; UV filtration is a different property. Check the exact product selected. Depending on the construction, a gap can be provided between image and glazing. The studio confirms the choice according to the artwork, dimensions and display location.

Keep files and originals too

Keep the master file and several copies on separate media. Store negatives and slides in suitable enclosures. A stated lifespan for a paper-and-ink combination does not automatically apply to every display condition; consider the complete finished work.

Your questions

Does Fine Art paper always last a hundred years?

A lifespan cannot be generalised across all papers, inks and environments. Test results depend on specific conditions.

Can I clean the print with a damp cloth?

Avoid treating the printed surface without appropriate advice. Different finishes react differently.
