Choosing photographic and fine art paper

Paper is part of the image: it changes the depth of blacks, the softness of colours, reflections and the feel of the surface. The right choice depends on both your subject and its presentation.

89 papers to discover at the workshop

TH.BALDINI offers 89 different papers. Our detailed selection introduces Hahnemühle, Canson Infinity, ILFORD and Epson: composition, grain, white tone and appearance. Compare samples with Thierry Baldini, Maître Artisan.

Matt, satin or glossy?

Matt paper offers a soft appearance with few surface reflections. Satin and pearl surfaces balance richness and discretion. Gloss makes colours and blacks more pronounced, but requires thought about lighting and reflections. No finish is best in every situation: a delicate portrait and a night landscape may call for different choices.

Cotton, cellulose and baryta papers

Cotton and alpha-cellulose describe the fibres of the paper base. Baryta refers to a family of papers whose coating contains barium sulphate, with a look inspired by traditional photography. A baryta paper can be cellulose-based; it is not necessarily cotton. Paper weight describes mass, not quality or longevity on its own.

Texture and paper white

A smooth surface preserves small details and fine lines. A more pronounced texture adds a tactile quality suited to some reproductions and painterly images. Natural white tends to feel softer than bright white. Optical brighteners, when present, affect the perceived white under different lighting. Check each exact paper rather than making assumptions about a brand.

Papers discussed by the studio

Our pages cover Hahnemühle, Canson, Epson and Ilford papers featured by ThB and Kodak Express. Some names describe families: a pearl paper or canvas may come in several versions. The final choice is made using the precise product and a sample, according to size and availability. Bamboo, agave and hemp fibres offer different surface qualities; none identifies a single product.

A proof is more useful than a screen

A screen emits light; paper reflects the room’s light. We recommend comparing samples and, for a demanding project, making a proof. View it under lighting similar to the display location. The frame, glazing and window mount are also part of the decision.

Your questions

Which paper should I choose for black and white?

Baryta can give deep blacks and a traditional photographic presence. Matt may better suit a soft or highly graphic image. Compare both using your own photograph.

Can I request a specific paper?

Yes. Give us the full product name; we check its size, availability and suitability for your project.
