Artwork reproduction: colour and photography

Reproducing a painting, drawing or artwork means respecting its colours, proportions and texture. The shoot is planned around the original and the intended use of the file.

Start with the intended use

Files for a website, artist portfolio, catalogue and print edition do not have exactly the same requirements. Give the artwork’s dimensions, medium, surface and largest planned use. A varnished painting, pastel and glazed work require different precautions.

Controlling reflections and geometry

Lighting and camera positioning are essential. We aim for an image that respects proportions and avoids distracting reflections. Depending on the artwork, texture must remain visible without the lighting taking over. Transport, handling and possible frame removal are considered before the session.

Approve the colour

Faithful reproduction requires a consistent workflow from capture to output. An uncalibrated screen alone cannot establish a perfect match. If you want prints, paper selection and a proof are part of the project. The paper’s white and texture influence the result.

From original to edition

Together, we can plan photography, file preparation, paper choice and presentation. For an identified edition, also define the size, number of copies and documentation. Digigraphie is one possible framework when its protocol requirements are met.

Preparing an appointment

Send an overall view and dimensions of the artwork, then describe its condition, framing and intended use. For a series, state the number of pieces. We prepare a proposal reflecting shooting time, adjustments and desired deliverables.

Your questions

Can you reproduce an artwork behind glass?

This depends on reflections and whether the frame can safely be handled or opened. Do not attempt risky dismantling before your appointment.

Can paper texture reproduce a painting’s texture?

It can suggest a material quality, but cannot reproduce the original’s actual relief. A proof helps choose a coherent interpretation.
